Hi my name is Justin ‘Gosso’ Gossage. I am 35 years old, a father of two loving and very active boys that are my world. Just under two years ago I decided to make a change in my life. I was a pack a day smoker and drank heavy daily. On the 9th of October 2014 I made the choice to leave that life and become the person I wanted to be, a healthier and happier person, and I haven’t looked back kicking both cigarettes and alcohol out of my life.
At the end of last year I was invited to do Park run in Devonport with a friend. “What me,” I hadn’t run since cross country in High School. It wasn’t long and I was hooked, I never knew how liberating, challenging and enjoyable running could be.
My fitness improved dramatically in a short time and I took my PB for 5km from 29 mins down to 19 mins. I decided to challenge myself further and competed in the Convict and Wenches run, followed by the Launceston Ten, and then the Townsville 1/2 marathon.
I applied to the MMM program to challenge myself and to continue my journey of being a better role model for my two boys and husband to my wife Kellie. I felt very honoured to be selected and the support offered has been fantastic.
Running has done something for me I never thought it could, in that it has introduced me to so many wonderful and amazing people who support and encourage each other no matter their abilities or backgrounds.
Now the big question, how’s the training so far? Currently about to start week four and its going great. I’m finding the two biggest challenges so far are, learning to slow down, not every run is a race. Secondly, that speed work is tough.
I look forward to continuing my journey on the programme and enjoy the opportunity afforded to me. I haven’t thought to much ahead to the Cadbury Marathon, but the day itself will be one of the most memorable I know.
