Hobart Rivulet Track

Scenic, culturally rich, and in the heart of the city, the Hobart Rivulet Track gently ascends alongside the Rivulet towards the Cascade Gardens.

The Hobart Rivulet Track is both a popular commuting route and a well-loved recreational track. It spans 2.5km from the Hobart CBD to the Cascade Gardens in South Hobart. The track is marked with kilometre markers and start/finish signs; if you run back the way you came, the resulting distance is 5km.

The path is well-maintained and relatively flat, making it suitable for runners, walkers, and cyclists alike. As the Hobart Rivulet itself descends from the foothills of Kunanyi / Mt Wellington, the Rivulet Track very gently climbs when travelling towards the mountain.

The Cascade Gardens connects to the broader network of trails throughout Kunanyi / Mt Wellington, including the Cascade Track. Toilets and water are available at the Gardens.

Cultural landmarks

Cultural points of interest along the way include: the Korean War memorial; interpretive signs explaining the history of the Rivulet and its uses for processing spirits, grain, and leather; and the colonial women’s prison (the Female Factory) in South Hobart. Cascade Gardens is situated outside the famous facade of the Cascade Brewery, first built in 1824 and refinished in 1927.

The Hobart Platypus

Platypuses, which live in burrows along the rivulet’s banks, are a common sighting in summer. They have been made famous in recent years by the conservation efforts of the Hobart Rivulet Platypus project. It’s easy to tell when a platypus is splashing around in the Rivulet because there will be a small crowd (and at least one person with a camera) watching it.
