Risdon Brook Park is a popular recreational area for Hobartians, balancing the natural bush landscape and accessibility.
Park access
Nestled within the Mt Direction Conservation Area, Risdon Brook Park is home to one of Hobart’s largest drinking water reservoirs, created by the Risdon Brook Dam. Park access is managed by TasWater. Gates are open from 7:30am-4:30pm during the cooler months, and open until 8pm when Daylight Savings is in effect.
Risdon Brook Park is a 15-minute drive from Hobart. Access the park via Grasstree Hill Road, a short distance from the roundabout on the East Derwent Hwy at Risdon, where you will see a TasWater sign for Risdon Brook Park. Follow the access road another few hundred metres to reach the carpark.
The circuit track
The track itself is mostly flat, but with a couple of sharp hills thrown in. The graded gravel surface is accessible for running prams, and part of the loop includes running over the Risdon Brook Dam itself. Wallabies and other local marsupials are frequently spotted in the park, especially on quieter days.
Several 4WD tracks lead off the main loop, making it possible to extend your run distance, or you can stay on the loop around the reservoir and return to the start. Approximately 1km from the carpark, heading clockwise, the start of the Mt Direction track commences through a small gate off a hairpin bend.
This park is also the home of the Risdon Brook parkrun, a free, timed 5km run held every Saturday at 9am. It was the first parkrun launched in Southern Tasmania!
Note: Because Risdon Brook is a water catchment area, dogs are not permitted in the park.
